PhD candidate Oliver Schmidt graduated from the MSc in 2013. Here he talks to us about his current research, some of the things he loves, some which he loves to hate and his memories of the Sustainable Energy Futures course.
What is your job title?
I am currently a PhD Candidate in the climate change mitigation team at the Grantham Institute, Imperial College London.
What do you actually do?
Investigate potential future costs of energy storage (expert interviews, learning curve analysis, bottom-up engineering models) and analyse role in future energy system (energy systems modelling).
Where are you if you are not in your office/lab/field?
In the pub or on the tennis court.
Which living person do you most admire, and why?
Elon Musk – for actively transforming the world we live in to the better with cool ideas like electric cars, stationary battery storage, spaceships, etc.
What’s your favourite book/song/film?
Way too many to list!
What would your super power be?
I would love to be able to read other people’s minds.
Who would play you in the film of your life story?
A tennis-playing nerd with a backpack.
What is your favourite word?
Active.
How would you like to be remembered?
A guy with a positive impact on the world.
What’s the most important lesson life has taught you?
To always be positive.
What is your favourite memory of your MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures?
Doing the harlem-shake in the bunker.
